There is a strong drive in the SCADA industry for standardisation of communication interfaces for interconnection of various subsystems in a typical SCADA system. On the same lines the Electric Utility SCADA industry has zeroed in on some communication protocols to be used for interconnecting the Remote Terminal Units to the HMI Servers and IED's like the Energy Meters, Protection Relays etc.

    The interface between the RTU and a Protection  Relay is defined by an IEC standard, IEC 870-5-103. This standard defines the communication methodology to be adopted to exchange typical Protection Relay parameters - the real-time voltage and current values for all the phases and event information also. This is a synchronous Master/Slave protocol supporting time-stamping of acquired data also.

    With a long history of having worked on Electricity Distribution Sub-station SCADA, Sunlux has created the IEC-870-5-103 Master protocol stack to be used by OEM's for quickly providing IEC 870-5-103 support for their RTU's. The stack features the following advantages to the end user:

1) Stack available in the form of ANSI C compliant portable source code libraries that can be ported onto any 'C' supporting platform.

2) Stack designed for physical layer independence - this means that the physical layer can be completely defined by the end user.

3) The stack has been ported successfully on the OS9 real-time operating system and has been integrated into ISaGRAF, an IEC 61131-3 programming Soft PLC tool. This has distinct advantages to OEM's who have based their products on ISaGRAF. Our product group is working on making ready to use binary versions of the stack for other operating systems like VxWorks, WinCE etc.

4) Fully tested stack allows quick integration into your products. Typical integration time is about 4-5 weeks including the time for testing.

5) Clearly documented code with instructions to the user for source level integration. The code has been designed to expose minimum amount of code to the end user thus reducing chances of accidental code corruption.
