There is a strong drive in the SCADA industry
for standardisation of communication interfaces for interconnection of various
subsystems in a typical SCADA system. On the same lines the Electric Utility
SCADA industry has zeroed in on some communication protocols to be used for
interconnecting the Remote Terminal Units (RTU) to the Human Machine Interface (HMI)
Servers and IED's like the Energy Meters, Protection Relays etc.
The interface between the
HMI and a RTU is defined by a protocol standard known as the Distributed Network
Protocol (DNP3.0). This standard derived from the IEC 870-5-101 specification,
defines the communication methodology to be adopted to exchange generic analog
and digital data between a HMI Server and a RTU. The standard is asynchronous
allowing RTU's to send unsolicited event information to the HMI servers on
priority basis. The standard also supports exchange of time stamped data. For
more information on DNP 3.0 please visit

With a long history of
having worked on Electricity Distribution Sub-station SCADA, Sunlux has created
the DNP 3.0 Slave protocol stack to be used by OEM's for quickly providing DNP
3.0 support for their RTU's. The stack features the following advantages to the
end user:
1) Stack available in the form of ANSI C
compliant portable source code libraries that can be ported onto any 'C'
supporting platform.
2) Stack designed for physical layer
independence - this means that the physical layer can be completely defined by
the end user.
3) The stack is being currently ported on the
OS9 real-time operating system and is planned to be integrated into ISaGRAF, an
IEC 61131-3 programming Soft PLC tool. Once this compatibility is confirmed it
will have distinct advantages to OEM's who have based their products on ISaGRAF.
Our future plan includes creating ready to use binary versions of the stack for
other operating systems like VxWorks, WinCE etc.
4) Fully tested stack allows quick integration
into your products. Typical integration time is about 5-6 weeks including the
time for testing.
5) Clearly documented code with instructions to
the user for source level integration. The code has been designed to expose
minimum amount of code to the end user thus reducing chances of accidental code
corruption.
Sunlux also provides
integration services to interested customers. Sunlux's roadmap of industrial
communication stack development includes the DNP3.0 Master and the IEC 870-5-103
Slave stacks also. So please visit the site frequently to find updated
